5 Benefits of a Strong Core

The muscles we refer to as the “core” are located in the trunk of the body and include key muscles like the internal and external obliques, pyramidalis, rectus abdominis and the transversus abdominus. The strength of these muscles at the center of the body can have a big impact on other areas, especially if they are weak. Here are 5 important benefits of having a strong core:

Reduced risk of injury

Having a strong core can reduce your risk of injury in many areas of the body. Weakness in the core area can lead to general fatigue, trouble lifting, or pain in the back, hip or pelvis. In some cases, a weak core can even contribute to breathing difficulties and lower endurance, as the diaphragm is part of the structure of the core and pelvic floor.

Improved posture to reduce back pain

Back pain is one of the most common complaints we hear from patients, and core strength is often a contributing factor in the person’s pain. A stronger core can help improve a person’s posture, which helps protect the back and spine while sitting, standing or performing other activities.

Improved sports performance

We often think of a strong core for athletes like gymnasts or weightlifters, but core strength is a major factor in nearly every type of physical activity. A strong core can contribute in a big way to an athlete’s power, whether they are cycling, swimming in a race, kicking a soccer ball or hitting a tennis ball.

Aging Well

Many complaints of old age are related to core strength. If you’ve ever seen an older person have difficulty standing for long periods or struggle to rise from sit to stand, chances are a weak core may be contributing to those problems. A strong core can also improve a person’s overall balance while reducing their risk of a dangerous fall.

Feel better overall

When it comes down to it, a strong core will really just make you feel better during your daily activities. With a stronger core, even basic tasks like climbing stairs, getting dressed, vacuuming or carrying children (including grandchildren!) will become easier.

Don’t let a weak core keep you from feeling your best. Request an appointment or free screening with an experienced physical therapist near you to get a customized strengthening plan.
