Renue Physical Therapy offers physical and occupational therapy to help student athletes recover from injury.

ACUTE INJURIES

Acute injuries generally occur suddenly due to a collision during play, a twist of a joint or a fracture. After an initial period of rest, ice, compression and elevation of the injured area, an experienced physical therapist can help athletes recover and regain functioning while minimizing and managing their pain.

OVERUSE INJURIES

Overuse injuries are the most common athletic conditions treated by physical and occupational therapy teams. The repeated motions required in most sports can lead to pain and injury, and can lead to more serious long term issues if not addressed.

Overuse injuries can affect muscles, ligaments, tendons, and growth plates. Bone stress injuries are another common overuse injury in young athletes. When athletes are consistently engaged in strenuous activity, it can weaken the bones and lead to stress fractures. In many sports, these are most likely to occur in the shinbones or the feet.

CONCUSSIONS

Concussions are milder, but significant, traumatic brain injuries. They are caused by a blow to the head or body that results in the brain moving rapidly back and forth inside the skull.

Although some sports have higher instances of concussion, concussions can happen in any sport or recreational activity. The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued a statement recommending that young athletes with concussions be evaluated and cleared by a healthcare professional before returning to sports.

GROWTH PLATE INJURIES

Before children are fully grown, they have cartilage near the ends of bones that have not yet hardened into solid bone. This can make children more vulnerable to injury, and injuries to the growth plate can affect continued growth if not addressed by a professional care team.

RETURN TO PLAY

It is incredibly important that an athlete’s injury be completely healed before returning to play. Returning to sport too soon makes the athlete more vulnerable to serious injury, and often leads to more harm than good. An experienced therapy team can help athletes recover properly and feel confident in their ability to return to play

PREVENTION

The good news is, most common sports injuries can be prevented! At the first sign of pain or dysfunction, athletes can receive sport-specific training to help them prevent injury and strengthen key areas.

An experienced therapy team can help athletes understand proper form, stretching and exercise that can help them prepare for play, reduce risk of injury and in many cases, even improve performance and help them advance their skills more quickly.
