What is a developmental delay?

When a child does not meet developmental milestones within the range of “typical,” your pediatrician may recommend that they be seen by a pediatric therapist. Here are some examples of developmental milestones and their timeframes:

  • Push up on arms during tummy time (3 months)
  • Opens mouth as a spoon approaches (6 months)
  • Claps hands (12 months)

Remember, there are cultural differences in raising children. Family heritage and traditions are always important to consider when looking at an infant’s development.

If you are concerned that your baby is not rolling or that your toddler is not speaking yet, pediatric therapy could help.

What is pediatric therapy, and what can I expect during my child’s treatment?

Our clinic has a team of pediatric occupational therapists (OTs), and physical therapists (PTs) . Based on your child’s needs, one or all of our team may treat your child. Here is what you can expect from each of the therapy disciplines:

  • Occupational Therapists specialize in fine motor skills and activities of daily living (dressing, toileting, and feeding). They are experts in sensory-motor development and sensory integration therapy.
  • Physical Therapists are trained to address movement dysfunction. They will assess how your child is meeting their gross motor milestones, for example, rolling, crawling, and walking.

Our skilled therapists are ready to help your child and we look forward to helping your child gain independence, improve their skills, and have fun while doing so.

My 10-year-old daughter had PT to help with pain in her ankles and feet related to walking on her toes. She has had less complaints of pain since starting PT. She loved her experience so much that she wants to be a physical therapist herself now when she grows up!
