Physical Therapy vs. Occupational Therapy – How Can it Help Me?

Occupational therapy (OT) and physical therapy (PT) both fall under rehabilitative services, and both types of therapists have a goal to help their patients live active, healthy and independent lives. While OT and PT share many similarities, they both approach treatment from different mindsets.

Both PTs and OTs work with their patients to deliver hands-on rehabilitative care to heal injuries, restore movement and improve key skills. While this list is not all-inclusive, here are just a few examples of how physical therapists and occupational therapists help their patients thrive:

PHYSICAL THERAPY

Help a marathon runner find relief from plantar fasciitis pain while performing a gait analysis to help her achieve a more efficient stride and prevent future injuries
Provide balance and strength training to help an aging man feel more confident climbing stairs while reducing his risk of falls
Develop a detailed exercise, strengthening and stretching plan for a manufacturing worker to help relieve and prevent sciatica pain in his back and legs
Design a post-surgical plan of action after knee replacement surgery to help the patient regain her flexibility, range of motion, strength and more to return to her favorite activities

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

  • Provide education, energy conservation techniques, and balance safety strategies to a gentleman with Parkinson’s Disease to help slow progression of the disease
  • Educate an elderly woman on how to find relief from painful arthritic hands through targeted exercises, joint protection strategies, and adaptive equipment
  • Provide hope for an aging woman who has begun to lose her independence due to debility by designing adaptations that allow her to thrive
  • Help a young man who lost his finger in an accident learn how to use his prosthetic and adapt to daily tasks to continue living independently
  • So, which one is right for me?

Your healthcare provider, physical therapist or occupational therapist can help you determine which services are the best fit for your needs and goals. In some cases, you may benefit from working with both a PT and an OT to tackle your concerns from different perspectives.

Talk with your doctor or request a free 15-minute screening at a Renue clinic near you for a recommendation on where to start. Occupational therapy is offered at our Bridgeport and Caro clinics, and certified hand therapy is offered at our Frankenmuth and Saginaw Bay Road clinics.
