Big News For Aetna Patients: Easier Access to Physical Therapy!

Great news! Aetna has recently updated its policy, making it easier than ever to get the physical therapy care you need.
Here’s what’s changed (for traditional Aetna plans only; excludes Aetna Medicare):
- No physician’s referral required!
- No physician signature needed on your plan of care
These changes mean you can start physical therapy faster without jumping through extra hoops, and work directly with your physical therapist to find relief from chronic pain, recover from an injury or prevent future issues from flaring.
Collaboration Remains Key
Although a referral is no longer required to begin care, we recognize and respect the essential role physicians play in each patient’s health journey. With your consent, we will continue to keep your physician informed and involved throughout your treatment plan.
Please note:
While Aetna no longer requires a physician’s order, Michigan state law still limits direct access care to 21 days or 10 visits without a referral. If your care team finds you need treatment beyond these limits, we can help you coordinate next steps.
These changes apply to physical therapy only (occupational and speech therapy still require a referral).
