From Traumatic Wrist Injury to Functional Recovery: Trent’s Story

Just weeks after graduating high school, Trent was already hard at work building his future. As a carpenter apprentice, he was focused on gaining experience, earning a steady income, and stepping into independence. Then, in an instant, everything changed.

A Life-Altering Accident

In July 2025, while working with a saw, an unexpected kickback caused a severe injury to Trent’s left wrist. The accident resulted in significant damage, including eight tendons, two arteries, and nerves. He was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery to repair the damage and save function in his hand.

Looking back, Trent remembers the moment with surprising clarity, not because of pain, but because of uncertainty. “I don’t think I really felt much right away. I was kind of in shock,” he said. “My first thought was how I was going to keep working.”

Even though the injury was to his non-dominant hand, Trent knew how essential both hands are in carpentry. At just 18, with his career just beginning, the question was not just about recovery. It was about his future.

Starting the Road to Recovery

About two weeks after surgery, Trent was referred to Renue Physical Therapy – Saginaw Bay Rd, where he began occupational therapy with Paige Rybak, BS, MSOT, OTRL, a therapist specializing in hand rehabilitation. From the start, Trent approached therapy the same way he approached work, with consistency and determination.

Over the course of 36 visits from July through December 2025, he committed fully to his recovery, both in the clinic and at home. “He was one of those patients you don’t forget,” Paige said. “He showed up ready to work every single time and followed through on everything we asked him to do. That kind of consistency and compliance makes a huge difference, especially with an injury like this.”

Putting in the Work

Recovering from a complex wrist injury takes more than time. It requires a carefully guided, hands-on approach. Throughout his therapy, Trent’s plan of care included:

  • Custom orthotic fabrication, designed and adjusted as he healed
  • Progressive strengthening and mobility work to restore function in his hand and fingers
  • Use of a BTE work simulator, allowing him to safely replicate job-specific tasks and gradually rebuild strength
  • Dry needling techniques to address scar tissue and improve mobility

Trent began to notice progress early on. “I could tell even in the first week that things were starting to come back, and that I was gaining strength in my fingers,” he said. “That kept me motivated.”

As his strength improved, therapy sessions evolved to match his goals, including getting back to work, to the gym, and eventually to the activities he enjoyed most.

More Than Just Physical Recovery

While the physical progress was significant, Trent’s mindset played just as important a role. His steady attitude carried him through the toughest parts of recovery, with his therapy team noticing how calm and determined he remained, even in challenging moments. Trent also credits his faith as a source of motivation, helping him stay focused on what lay ahead rather than what had been lost.

That mindset did not go unnoticed. “Trent’s dedication was remarkable,” Paige said. “He attacked each challenge with determination, always willing to push himself further and do the work needed to regain full function. That kind of drive is rare and inspiring.”

And while their work together was challenging, Paige provided support beyond the physical exercises. She was there for encouragement, guidance, and motivation, helping Trent stay confident through every step of his recovery. Her care and mentorship meant a lot to him, so much so that he gave her a nickname that stuck. “I call her my ‘therapy mom,’” Trent said with a laugh.

Back to Work and Looking Ahead

Now, about eight months after his injury, Trent has returned to carpentry and is back to doing most of the things he enjoys. He reports only minor limitations in thumb mobility and continues to build strength as he goes. From lifting weights to preparing to return to martial arts, his focus remains the same as it was on day one: to keep improving.

What stands out most is not just the outcome. It is how he got there. Through consistency, resilience, and a willingness to put in the work day after day, Trent turned a life-altering injury into a story of recovery and forward momentum. “I’m able to do pretty much everything I want to do now,” he said.

For Paige, seeing that kind of outcome is exactly why the work matters. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see someone go from such a serious injury back to living their life,” she said. “Trent put in the effort every step of the way, and that’s what made this possible.”

A Story of Strength and Determination

Today, you might not immediately notice everything Trent has been through – a subtle scar remains on his wrist, though you probably wouldn’t notice it unless you knew to look for it. But his recovery tells a much bigger story, one of grit, discipline, and a clear sense of purpose. Less than a year after a devastating injury, he is back on the job, continuing to build both his career and his future.

When asked what advice he would give to others facing a serious injury, Trent kept it simple. “If you find yourself in a hole, you have to dig yourself out.”
