Hand Therapy: 5 Things to Know

SPECIALIZED TRAINING

Because hands are incredibly complex and key to our everyday lives, extensive training is required to become a Nationally Certified Hand Therapist.

A hand therapist must have a minimum of three years experience in occupational or physical therapy, accumulate 4,000 hours of hand therapy practice time and pass a rigorous national examination.

CUSTOMIZED CARE

A person’s hands are very personal and unique, so each case is different and requires a custom treatment plan specific to that person’s needs.

The therapist will work with each patient to identify their personal goals and tailor their treatment and exercise plans to help them achieve their ideal outcome.

EDUCATION IS KEY

Our therapist helps patients fully understand their condition or injury and how different types of exercises and modalities can benefit them. This includes education on what they can do to prevent pain and dysfunction from recurring in the future.

TYPES OF PATIENTS WE TREAT

Our nationally certified hand therapist has experience treating patients of all types. Some common diagnoses we see include:

  • Amputation
  • Arthritis
  • Burns and Frostbite
  • Complex Regional Pain Syndrome/RSD
  • Dupuytren’s Contracture
  • Fractures and Dislocations
  • Nerve Entrapment Disorders, including Carpal Tunnel and Cubital Tunnel Syndrome
  • Rheumatic Disease/Disorders
  • Tendon and Nerve Injuries
  • Tendinitis
  • Traumatic Injuries

CONTINUUM OF CARE

We understand the importance of working closely with the entire care team to ensure a continuum of care. This may include surgeons, physicians and other healthcare professionals who have a key role in the patients’ rehabilitation.

Therapy often begins immediately after surgery or injury and continues through recovery to help the patients readjust to their job and daily life.
