5 Myths About Sciatica Pain

Sciatica is one of the most common and also the most misunderstood types of pain. Read on to learn some common myths about sciatica and the truths that can lead to relief.

MYTH #1: “SCIATICA” IS A DIAGNOSIS.

Sciatica is the term used to describe symptoms caused by another medical condition, but “sciatica” itself is not a medical diagnosis. Sciatica can be caused by a number of issues, including a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis and more.

MYTH #2: PAIN MEDICATION CURES SCIATICA.

There isn’t much evidence to support that anti-inflammatory drugs provide significant relief for sciatica pain, and they certainly don’t cure it. Medication may provide mild relief, but it does nothing to address the cause of sciatica pain.

MYTH #3: ALL TYPES OF SHOOTING LEG PAIN IS CONSIDERED SCIATICA.

There are many things that can cause leg pain. Talk with your primary care physician or physical therapist to help determine if the pain you’re experiencing is considered sciatica.

MYTH #4: REST IS THE BEST REMEDY.

Most patients find that staying active and avoiding prolonged rest leads to better results. Many studies have found little to no benefit to staying in bed when compared with staying active for people with sciatica pain.

MYTH #5: YOU CAN’T PREVENT SCIATICA.

While not all cases of sciatica can be prevented, there are many things you can do to lower your risk. Staying active, using proper form during activities and strengthening your core can all help keep sciatica pain at bay.

Physical therapy has proven to be an effective treatment for sciatica, and is particularly effective in preventing future flareups. Contact a clinic near you to request an appointment, or request a free screening.
