Physical Therapy Found to Provide Greater Sciatica Relief in Recent Study

Sciatica is one of the most common types of pain, affecting as many as 40% of people at some point in their lifetime.

Though it is one of the more common types of pain, sciatica is quite different from standard back pain. Because the pain is generated from nerves, it behaves differently than other types of back pain. Sciatica pain radiates along the sciatic nerve, starting at the lower back through the hips and buttocks, down each leg. Sciatica typically only affects one side of the body.
Sciatica is the term used to describe symptoms caused by another medical condition, but “sciatica” itself is not a medical diagnosis. Sciatica can be caused by a number of issues, including a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis and more.
A recent study found physical therapy improved multiple outcomes for those with sciatica pain when started within three days of an initial primary care visit. Patients were split into two groups – one receiving physical therapy and one receiving “usual care,” including back pain education and advice to stay active.

Patients in the physical therapy group reported statistically significant improvements in Oswestry Disability Index scores, which measures level of function during activities of daily living. They also reported less pain than the control group at four weeks, six months and 1 year after their initial primary care visit. Physical therapy patients were more likely to rate their treatments as successful at the four-week and one-year marks.
